Box Office: 'Aisha' starts well at high-end plexes, dull at places

The sole release, AISHA, opened well at high-end multiplexes of metros, with the opening and noon shows performing to 70% to 80% occupancy. However, the response at some properties [single screens and small centres] was dull, with the opening being in 20% to 25% range. The evening shows at plexes of major centres showed very good occupancy. The film has opened at 550 screens and the plexes are expected to contribute the maximum on Day 1.

The factor that goes in its favour is its costing. The cost of production is around Rs. 14 cr. [excl. P. & A.] and the makers have recovered a big chunk of the investment from the sale of Satellite Rights [Rs. 9 cr.] and Music Rights [Rs. 1.5 cr.]. The balance amount [Rs. 3.5 cr. + P. & A.] is to be recovered from India theatrical + Overseas + Home Video.

Sonam's bro Harsh is a big fan of Priyanka

Sonam Kapoor is taking her role as matchmaker a little too seriously. This time, it's off-screen. Her brother Harsh is a big Priyanka Chopra fan and the badi didi is trying to strike a friendship between the two.

She tweeted to PC: "My brother thinks you are the hottest woman alive and wants you to know that he is young, single and very good looking."

PC replied by saying: "That's a thought. Please tell him thanks so much and that I am in the same category. Looking forward to getting to know him." Next is what?

Spotted: Sonam Kapoor, Preity Zinta

Sonam Kapoor outside a suburban lounge bar on Tuesday night. When the actress left the venue, two bikers tailed her for an autograph. Anil Kapoor's daughter obliged them by stopping her car and signing her name on a piece of paper for them.

Preity Zinta was seen at an event after a long time. We are not sure what her excuse is for wearing shimmery pants. Nope, she didn't come in straight from shooting a song for one of her films.

Sonam's liplock with Abhay in 'Aisha'

Kareena's done it, Vidya's done it, and even Aishwarya's done it. We're talking about kissing on-screen, and it does seem like it's really not such a big deal for B'wood's leading ladies anymore. The latest name in the list is Sonam Kapoor who's shared a hot liplock with Abhay Deol in 'Aisha'.

Bit surprising that Sonam chose her home production for her first on-screen kiss, or maybe the comfort level was greater. For Abhay Deol at least it was the comfort level factor that made the kiss with Sonam comfortable. He's said it was the reason that there was no awkwardness between them. Abhay's pretty much a veteran of movie kisses (think 'Dev D', 'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!' and 'Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local'). And he says that Sonam is a great kisser. Wonder how Sonam rates Abhay!

MOVIE WALLPAPERS: AISHA

Hollywood calling for Sonam Kapoor

She's riding high on the success of 'I Hate Luv Storys', her first hit in Bollywood, and now Sonam Kapoor has more reasons to celebrate. It seems that she's been offered roles in two Hollywood productions, one of them with Ben Stiller. Apparently, dad Anil Kapoor (who's made a name for himself in Hollywood after 'Slumdog Millionaire') met Stiller to discuss a joint production, and that's when Sonam's name came up.

She is also supposed to have been offered a role in a movie by Eduardo Ponti (the son of legendary actress Sophia Loren) which will be shot in India.

Sonam is said to be thinking about these roles, as she has a busy schedule ahead. She's shooting for 'Mausam' with Shahid Kapoor and 'Thank You' with Akshay Kumar this year.

Will Sonam head for Hollywood and make an impression like her dad did? Watch this space for updates.

'I Hate Luv Storys' finds love at the box office

Imran Khan-Sonam Kapoor starrer takes in Rs 215 million in first three days of its release

Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor's romantic comedy 'I Hate Luv Storys' (IHLS) might be about a guy's hatred for mushy movies, but it has managed to bag just the opposite from reaction audiences. The film has done a net business of approximately Rs.21.5 crore (Rs.215 million) in the domestic circuit in the first three days of its release.

Co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Dharma Productions, the movie opened with net collections of Rs.6.5 crore (Rs.65 million) on July 2 with soaring business over the weekend.

"We have got a good amount with almost 85 percent occupancy during the weekend. People are liking the movie especially the younger generation. It has good cinematography and a contemporary story. We hope it does well during weekdays and has a second weekend run," Jayendra Banerji, vice president (Operations) of Satyam Cineplexes, said.

Said Amit Awasthi, senior manager (Programming and Operations) of Spice Cinemas: "The weekend for IHLS was very good with close to 85 percent occupancy and gross collection of Rs.2.3 million over the weekend with 26 shows per day. Imran and Sonam's chemistry is being appreciated and proves that Imran is a complete chocolate boy while Sonam is Bollywood's bubbly asset."

A source from PVR cinemas said: "The weekend was good and we had over 70 percent occupancy. We are running on an average 10 shows per property per day and hoping this one will get a second weekend run too. It has been enormously liked by college going audiences and the youth for its contemporary appeal."

"People are also liking the new pairing of Imran and Sonam." the source added.

Directed by debutant Punit Malhotra, IHLS revolves around Jay (Imran) and Simran (Sonam), who are complete opposites of each other in terms of romance. While Jay doesn't believe in love and condemns it as a cynic, Simran swears by it and has a very Bollywood idea of the emotion.

The movie is Imran's first hit after 'Kidnap' and 'Luck' did badly and Sonam's first ever hit after big-budget duds 'Saawariya' and 'Delhi-6'.

"The IHLS weekend went fairly well. Occupancy was a decent one with 45-50 percent. Youngsters are liking the movie. Even on Monday people are inquiring about weekday shows," said Deepak Taluja, senior vice president (Business and Operations) of Fun Cinemas.

"We are running around eight to 10 shows for three screen properties and around 12-14 shows for four screen properties. We are hoping for a decent show for IHLS in the next weekend as well," he added.

Amit Shah, chief manager (Programming) of DLF DT cinemas said: "Despite not so great reviews by critics, IHLS has done an exceptionally good business with an initial weekend of over 75 percent occupancy. In fact, our Chandigarh property had a 100 percent occupancy for all the three days.

"It is a completely youth centric film and hopefully it will sustain in the second week too," he added.

Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (Cinemas) of Wave Cinemas says the box office performance of the film met their expectations.

"The business for IHLS went as per expectations and has been above average. The movie has got youth appeal and since it had no competition at the box office in terms of Hindi films last Friday, it has done a satisfactory business with family support. We are running on an average 16 shows per day per property."

B.O. update: Youth luves 'Luv Storys', film starts with a bang

    I Hate LUV Storys, Imran Khan,Sonam Kapoor,Sameer Dattani,Sameer Soni,Bruna Abdulla,Ketaki Dave,Anju Mahendroo,Aamir Ali Malik,Pooja Ghai

The second half of 2010 has begun with a bang, with the first release of July, I HATE LUV STORYS, fetching a fantabulous start. The film took off in a big way from the morning shows itself, with big city multiplexes opening to 80% to 90% response. At places, the occupancy was 100% as well. At plexes of relatively smaller centres, the opening was in 60% to 70% range, while single screens, expectedly, were not strong. The opening at some single screens was good [it picked up at big centres during the course of the day], but at smaller centres, it was below average, in 30% to 40% range.

Looking at the tremendous response from the youth, several plexes decided to add more shows on Friday itself. Also, at several plexes, the film fetched one of the biggest starts of the year. The opening day figures at several plexes were at par with 3 IDIOTS and RAAJNEETI.

Imran's second release, KIDNAP, which came right after the smash hit JAANE TU YA JAANE NA, had fetched approx. Rs. 4.85 cr. nett on Day 1 [Thursday; National Holiday], while LUCK had fetched approx. Rs. 3.5 cr. nett on Day 1. I HATE LUV STORYS, Imran's fourth release after KIDNAP and LUCK sank at the box-office, is expected to fetch approx. Rs. 7 cr. on its opening day, which is fabulous.

The brand Karan Johar + fresh pairing + excellent music + terrific promotion have lured the youth in hordes, while the audience feedback ranges from good to excellent [the youth is loving it].

MOVIE REVIEW: I Hate LUV Storys

The first thing that attracts you to I HATE LUV STORYS is its title. Let's face it, we adore love stories... at least I do. We idolise the characters decades after the movies have come and gone. The songs that come on our lips instantly while playing a game of antakshri are romantic songs as well. In fact, the biggest moneyspinners, let's face it, have been love stories, right? So how can we 'hate' a love story?

No matter how mushy or cheesy they are, we find love stories irresistible because of the tremendous rush we experience at the end. Some of us are big suckers for love sagas, aren't we? That's precisely the reason why this title [I HATE LUV STORYS] nagged me no end every time I watched the promo of this film.

Helmed by first-timer Punit Malhotra, I HATE LUV STORYS is typical candyfloss romance with a story that's not jaw-droppingly different, let me forewarn you. But if you're young at heart or a diehard and hopeless romantic, you'd lap up I HATE LUV STORYS like a kid laps up his fav candy.

Now to the vital question: If I HATE LUV STORYS rests on a thin plot, what is it that drives the film for the next two hours? My answer to that is, four factors: The fresh pairing and chemistry between the lead cast, tremendous youth appeal, terrific music and magical moments that make a love story work.

Final word? The makers have never claimed that I HATE LUV STORYS will change the face of Hindi cinema. Nor did they ever claim that I HATE LUV STORYS will change the mindset of the viewer towards romantic films. So let's sit back and enjoy the fun ride. This one's by the youth, for the youth. It's this age-group that would come out smiling, cheering and rooting for this prem kahani.

'I hate love stories' is the maxim Jay [Imran Khan] lives by. But as an assistant director to Veer [Samir Soni], the most famous romantic film-maker of Indian film industry, Jay has little option but to live with larger than life, glossy, cinematic love on an everyday basis. Things only get worse when he is made to work under the new production designer on the film, Simran [Sonam Kapoor], with whom he shares the strangest first encounter.

Simran loves love stories, so much so that even her life has begun to resemble one. With her ideal job and the perfect boyfriend Raj [Samir Dattani], she lives a blissful, dreamy life. One that is rudely interrupted by Jay's cynicism.

Writer-director Punit Malhotra wins Round 1 by casting the right actors in the roles of Jay and Simran. In fact, it wouldn't be erroneous to state that the casting is the trump card of this film. But what Punit ought to know by now is that every story ought to have a strong grip to keep your attention arrested for the next two hours. In this case, the film rests on a waferthin plot, with not much movement in the story in the first hour. In fact, the story barely moves in the first part.

Yes, post-interval, the story does gather momentum and though you're well aware of the journey and what the culmination will be like, you don't mind the ride because you can't take your eyes off Imran and Sonam. Also, a love story works if one pines for the on-screen lovers and in I HATE LUV STORYS, you genuinely want the duo to sort things out, which means that you're involved in their lives. Even the finale - it won't be fair on my part to reveal how this movie concludes - may be filmy or cliched, but let's face it, it works.

Let me draw parallels with another love story, also starring Imran Khan. Recall the finale of JAANE TU YA JAANE NA, which had Imran riding a horse to reach his sweetheart [Genelia] at the airport. I distinctly recall, a lot of people found the end bizzare and rightly so. Can you imagine anyone galloping to the international airport in Mumbai? But I was truly surprised when I learnt that the youth were whistling and clapping all through. The finale is different here [no horses, please] and you exit the auditorium with a smile on your face.

Director Punit Malhotra is heavily inspired by Mills & Boon novels and several Bollywood films... love stories all. But like I pointed out earlier, Punit needs to polish his writing skills, although the director in him bails the writer out and takes the film to a different level. The sequences between Imran and Sonam are well penned, but the ones between Sonam and her parents or Sonam and Samir Dattani are half-baked. Directorially, Punit shows super-confidence in moulding the two actors in their respective parts, so much so that you get sucked into Jay and Simran's world after a while.

A love story ought to be embellished with a lilting score - that's a compulsion - and Vishal-Shekhar are in true form this time. The score is trendy, energetic and beyond fantastic and what's more, it's already a rage. In fact, the musical score only takes the movie a step ahead. Ditto for Salim-Sulaiman's background score, which matches the mood to the T. Ayananka Bose's cinematography is awesome. The ace DoP proved his credentials in KITES recently and with I HATE LUV STORYS, he should find himself entrenched in the top bracket. The styling [Manish Malhotra] is top notch.

Imran enacts his part effortlessly. Though the role doesn't demand histrionics, you keep reacting to Imran because of the magnetism he radiates. The devilish streak in his character is sure to appeal to the youth. Besides, Imran has been photographed and presented very well. Sonam is a revelation. From salwars [SAAWARIYA, DELHI 6] to skirts in I HATE LUV STORYS, Sonam finally gets a role that does justice to her as an actress. The ease and class with which she carries off the glam look is fantastic. She's like a whiff of fresh air and you actually wonder, is she the same girl from SAAWARIYA and DELHI 6? In fact, I HATE LUV STORYS will only multiply Imran and Sonam's fan base manifold.

Samir Dattani is decent, although his role gets sidelined as the story moves forward. Samir Soni's character reminds you of a certain hi-profile director and he plays the part extremely well. Kavin Dave, as Imran's buddy, is first-rate and steals the show in several scenes. Aamir Ali is perfect, while Pooja Ghai doesn't get scope to deliver. Bruna Abdullah looks sensuous and adds to the glam quotient. Ketaki Dave [Sonam's mother] is wasted. Anju Mahendru [Imran's mother] is adequate.

On the whole, I HATE LUV STORYS is a young and vibrant love story with tremendous appeal for the yuppies. The fresh pairing and the on-screen electrifying chemistry, the lilting musical score and the magical moments in the film should attract its target audience - the youth - in hordes. If you're young or young at heart, this one's for you!

WATCH (HQ) TRAILER: I Hate Luv Storys

Sonam is Sania!

Much has been talked about Aneez Bazmee’s Thank You and now all is set to start. Thank You stars Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Bobby Deol. It’s a romantic comedy.

The story connects it to Indian Tennis Player Sania Mirza. You must be thinking how? Not because she is getting married on the same day when the film will go on the floors. But Sonam Kapoor will play a character strikingly similar to Sania.

“She plays a sweet and sporty tennis player in the film. Sonam plays a state-level tennis champ in Canada so she cannot afford to look amateurish while playing the game in my film. I don’t expect her to become a tennis champ in a week but she should look like a professional,” says Anees Bazmee.

He also adds that, “Sonam is a bright actress and I know she will pick up soon and Akshay plays the Casanova who dates lots of girls until Sonam enters his life. It’s a light comedy film and we will start shooting in April in Canada. So now I am packing my bags and getting ready.”

Are Akshay and Sonam teaming up?

Buzz is Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor are teaming up for a film being directed by Kunal Kohli.

The film in question is a romantic caper based in Rome, Kunal had been working on the script for a while when he approached Akshay for the lead role. Akshay however found some loopholes in the script and told Kunal to rework on the script. However, he didn’t completely reject the offer and even mentioned Sonam’s name for the female lead. Kunal was over the roof and went around town boasting of Akki being the star of his film.

A source close to the director explained, “After the dud that was Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic, no one really was interested in working with Kunal. Yash Raj too had washed their hands of him and he didn’t have any big banner too support him for his next. He had earlier approached Ranbir Kapoor, Imran Khan, Shahid Kapur and Saif Ali Khan but all of them refused the film. He had even contemplated on playing the main lead himself and that’s when Akshay showed some interest. But rather than keeping it hush hush he was screaming off the rooftops that he’d found the stars of his next film, that’s when Akshay backed out. But you never know these stars they never really can make up their minds, who knows maybe Akshay might give it another thought.”

After Blue's sinking fate, Akki might have a change of heart, pairing with Sonam, which does have a novelty. His pairing with Deepika did not work, maybe Sonam will be his lucky girl, although that idea is also too unlikely since Sonam's films have so far bombed, both with Ranbir and Abhishek- who are no longer doing any projects with her.

When StarBoxOffice contacted Kunal Kohli, he straight out denied the rumours, “It’s not true as it’s too soon to talk about my next film, there’s still a lot of work going into it.” We hope Kunal pulls his socks up soon for if Khiladi Kumar and the Masakalli girl were to be teamed up together, now that would be something indeed!

Sonam’s better than Deepika

Sonam Kapoor has made more headlines with her flair for fashion than her choice of films. It is no wonder then that the style icon has topped People’s Best Dressed List for 2009.

Sonam Kapoor doesn’t stick to a particular style. She wears short dresses, skirts, gowns, jumpsuits, salwar-kurtas, churidaar-kurtas and pants with blouses, among other things. Her make up is always perfect and her long tresses are secured in a ponytail, braided or left loose. She loves gladiators, flats and high heels. Alberta Ferreti, Marios Schwab, Christian Dior, Anamika Khanna, Sabyasachi, Tarun Tahiliani, DvF, Alexander McQueen, Manish Arora are brands she wears often. She has walked the ramp for Tarun Tahiliani and Anamika Khanna.

Elle, Femina, L’Officiel, Harper’s Bazaar, Filmfare, Marie Claire and People are some of the magazine covers she has graced more than once. Surprisingly, the most stylish actress who even gives models a run for her money has never been featured on Vogue.

Deepika Padukone with her (usually) bad sense of style hasn’t made it to the list. Second on the list is the unmatched Kareena Kapoor who swears by Manish Malhotra (for traditional wear) and Roberto Cavalli (animal print dresses and shirts), next is hottie Priyanka Chopra who loves showing off her long legs and slender shoulders in mini dresses. She loves wearing sandals from Jimmy Choo. Star wife Twinkle Khanna who is always well turned out in brands like Badgley Mischka with Fendi and Gucci bags, makes it to the fourth place. Katrina Kaif with her unreliable sense of fashion, made it to the fifth place. She always looks gorgeous but dresses well only once in a blue moon.

Surprsisingly, quirky and willowy fashion slave Kangna Ranaut who dresses like a supermodel in brands like Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Bebe, Herve Leger, D&G and Burberry didn’t make it to the list. We think she should have pipped Katrina Kaif to the spot.

Sonam’s better than Deepika

Sonam Kapoor has made more headlines with her flair for fashion than her choice of films. It is no wonder then that the style icon has topped People’s Best Dressed List for 2009.
