Imran and Katrina teams up for Yashraj

Imran Khan has finally bagged his first film under the Yash Raj banner and will be seen romancing Katrina Kaif in the yet-to-be-titled film.

The film, a romantic comedy, is written and directed by debutant Ali Abbas Zafar and will be produced by Aditya Chopra. It is scheduled for a 2011 release and will go on the floor mid-September.

This is the first time Imran and Katrina will be acting together. Earlier, they'd been in talks to star in '7 Days in Paris' but that project never worked out.

A who's who list of Bollywood stars following Hollywood biggies on popular micro-blogging platform Twitter

Here's a who's who list of B-Towners following Hollywood biggies on Twitter. Find out what it says to be in the company they keep

What does it say about you when you decide to follow someone on Twitter? And that too, when the object of your attention is saat samundar paar? We decided to psychoanalyse our B-Town Twitterers based on their shared histories and our Wikipedia research. We bring you the results of our study. Read on...

What it says about him: Shah Rukh has no starry airs. He is a star but when he meets other performers, he gets as excited as any other besotted fan. He has even tweeted pictures of Shakira posing with his family in South Africa.

What it says about him: That KJo is an ardent admirer of the heiress-turned-model-turned actress. It's no secret he only wants to be surrounded by good-looking and rich folks, and he's even ready to follow them, if need be. Or maybe he wants to do a show inspired by her (not-so) Simple Life.

    Follower: Imran Khan (@1mrankhan)
    Following: Bob Saget (@bobsaget)
What it says about him: That Imran is a fan of the sweet family show that ran on for years. Maybe he sees the similarities between his close-knit family and that on the show. However, there is that little detail of Bob playing a single dad Danny Tanner in the hugely popular family show, while our boy is ready to get hitched. See, we told you he is a family guy.

    Follower: Ram Gopal Varma (@RGVzoomin)
    Following: Woody Allen (@WoodyAllen)

Professionally, maybe after paying tribute to intense, brooding filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, RGV now wants to follow Woody.

Imran’s got Kat and Priyanka panting

In the flaky world of films everyone is as good as his last Friday. And the light-eyed Imran Khan, who had a hit in I Hate Luv Storys, is suddenly the object of Bollywood’s desire.

Super-hotties Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra, who were chasing Ranbir Kapoor fast and furiously, completely over-looked Imran who was standing in the bylanes post those disasters Kidnap and Luck. In fact, when Sanjay Gadhvi’s 7 Days in Paris with Imran and Kat fell by the wayside after these two actors reportedly had “issues”, Kat didn’t even blink her mascaraed lashes. And PC, too, seemed in no hurry to come to the rescue of the pariah called Imran.

But all that stands changed post IHLS. And, why aren’t we surprised that the hoity-toity actresses now have a different stance on Aamir Khan’s light-eyed nephew. Reliable sources say that after Karan Johar announced his Short Term Shaadi (working title) with Kareena Kapoor and Imran, he reportedly got a message from Kat asking him why she was not selected for the Imran film. It is said that Karan assured her that his banner would be making many more films with Imran and, of course, Kat would be definitely considered for a role with the boy.

Sources close to Priyanka say that she has to choose between two films currently. One is said to be with Imran and the second could be Kunal Kohli’s film with Saif Ali Khan. PC is now in a dilemma on which of the two she should green-light. Her feelings for Imran are ditto that of Kat’s. Post IHLS the boy has the halo.

So, the clever PC is expected to do a photo-session with Imran to check out how good they look together. It clearly means that without saying anything, PC is making her preference evident. Or she may say yes to the Saif film, as well as the Imran one. Till yesterday, Kareena was envious of the fact that Kat and PC had a Ranbir in their kitty. Today the shoe is on the other foot. Both these girls want what Bebo has. Honestly, in this dog-eat-dog industry, the bone of contention is constantly changing. Now Imran has them all panting!

Imran, Kareena The new hot pair to star in 'Short Term Shaadi'

For those of us bored of seeing the same old jodis together on screen, here's a sizzling new pair. We're talking about Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, pretty much among the hottest people in Bollywood. And they're coming together for a rom-com tentatively titled 'Short Term Shaadi'.

Who's bringing these two together? Karan Johar's the man! He's producing the movie to be directed by debutant director Shakun Batra.

Think Karan and Imran will repeat the 'I Hate Luv Storys' magic with their new project? And what kind of chemistry will Kareena and Imran have? We'll be waiting for the movie to get our answers.

Imran Khan spent time with the Wavin' Flag singer K'Naan

Imran Khan, who flew to South Africa for the FIFA World Cup finals, had an encounter with K'Naan, the name behind the 2010 anthem, Wavin' Flag.

The Somalian-Canadian singer was staying in the same hotel as the actor. On Saturday evening, just before the Germany-Uruguay match, K'Naan performed several of his tracks including Wavin' Flag for a select audience.
Says Imran, "I did not know who he was. I had only heard that Wavin' Flag was his track. I was mesmerised. He is a super singer. As he is a Somalian, his music has that African beat to it."

Imran endorses the cola which has used Wavin' Flag in its commercials for the football tournament. The cola brand organised the private performance. "As there were only a few people present, I could see him perform from close quarters."

Imran was accompanied by a few friends for the trip. He had very little time to do any sightseeing. "I have to return to Mumbai for some post release events of I Hate Luv Storys. I also have to resume shooting for Break Ke Baad," reveals the actor

Buzz is that K'Naan is familiar with Bollywood music and has expressed a desire to score for Indian films. Composer duo Vishal-Shekhar are also slated to colloborate with the musician. "That would be great because the singer is a joy to listen to," adds Imran.

    About K'Naan
Poet, rapper, singer and songwriter K'Naan was born Keinan Abdi Warsame in Somalia and spent his childhood in Mogadishu. He moved to New York for a while before finally setting up base in Canada. He performed a spoken word piece criticising the UN for its failed aid missions to Somalia. One of the audience members, Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour was impressed and invited him to contribute to his 2001 album Building Bridges.

This project led him to his debut album The Dusty Foot Philosopher in 2005. He has collaborated with artists like Nelly Furtado, Mos Def, Will-i-Am, The Roots and Dead Prez. K'naan rose to mainstream popularity by participating in the 2008 BET Awards Cypher -- his first appearance on American television.

Bollywood stars ready for the FIFA World Cup

SRK, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta and many others are in Jo'burg, and having a blast

Football fever has never been more pronounced in Bollywood. Stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Imran Khan, Lara Dutta, Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt, have already reached Johannesburg to watch the World Cup final between Netherlands and Spain, and they are pretty excited.

SRK posted this picture of him and son Aryan earlier today, and wrote on his Twitter page, "We are ready for the world cup...our finals jo'bulani balls..bring it on."

He added later, "Chairman soccer in south africa was so kind to me at lunch & even made me make a speech..warmth of s africa very touching. having a blast. Ryan the rhino from our safari predicts holland will win...lets see if 8 arms or thick skin is right..ha ha."

Lara Dutta added, "Just got into Jo'burg. So far Spanish supporters outnumbering the Dutch! Had a contingent blowing their vuvuzelas right from the airport!:-) Its an amazing atmosphere! South Africa has bn wonderful hosts! Fans from across the globe r raring 2 go! EVERYONE has a jersey, headgear on."

Anil Kapoor is on his way now, but had almost cancelled his plans.

Sighed Anil, "Some work had come up. It looked like I wouldn’t be able to go to Johannesburg, though I had packed and booked seats at the stadium. But, I finally did make it. I am the brand ambassador and this is the biggest sports event," said Anil as he left for South Africa.

Another football enthusiast, Dino Morea, too seemed unsure of making it to Johannesburg. "I’m in London, all set to go. But my air ticket is not confirmed, if it doesn’t happen, then I’ll just have to watch it on television," he said.

The model turned actor is a huge football fan. "I play football and I love watching the sport. I was supporting Italy as I am half-Italian. Now, I’m supporting Spain because they have never won the Cup," he added.

Sanjay Dutt left his pregnant wife in Mumbai for the finals. He will be in South Africa with his two non-filmy best-friends.

"I wouldn’t miss the World Cup for the world. I’m the hugest football fan. I place it above cricket in my scheme of joy. I watched the silliest of games in the Cup. For the finals, I had to be here (in Johannesburg)," said the actor.

Dutt is rooting for Spain all the way. So is Jackky Bhagnani, producer Vashu Bhagnani’s son has apparently secured some of the best seats in the stadium for himself and his five friends from Mumbai.

Speaking from Johannesburg, Jackky exulted, "Man, I’ve the best view possible! I could never afford these seats, they are among the best in the stadium. An industrialist friend from Russia got me these seats. I can’t begin to express my excitement, I feel like an eight-year-old who has got his favourite toy. Me and my friends have our t-shirts, caps and flags ready. We’re rooting for Spain."

Adding to Jackky’s excitement is the fact that this is the first FIFA World Cup match he’s attending.

But for all the stars attending, there are some football lovers who had to miss the event. Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor are shooting in Colombo and Delhi respectively, while John Abraham had to cancel his plans for the finals because of a shoot with Vishal Bharadwaj.

Being a gay icon is flattering: Imran Khan

Imran Khan in a freewheeling chat with TOI talks about men applying make-up in Bollywood, his love for food and more

    Next time? Noida!
Imran Khan had a problem on his hands when he came to Delhi recently. He’d posted online that he was going to be in the capital at an event in Vasant Kunj, and that everyone could come and meet him, Sonam Kapoor and Punit Malhotra, his co-star and director from I Hate Luv Storys. He got a reply from someone saying, ‘But I’m in Noida - what do I do?’

In between getting his make-up and hair done, Imran promised that next time, people, he will come to Noida. But since he was stuck in a hotel room with his stylist putting pancake on his face, we were able to pin him down for a chat with her help. Here are some excerpts:

    Doesn’t make-up make you uncomfortable?
Discomfort, no - it’s standard part of the thing. I like to keep it as minimal as possible because you can tell when people are wearing make-up on screen.

    Even the male actors?
No, but at one time they did because at the time the way the lights were, the film was, the lens was, you needed to cover up a lot more.

    And any lip gloss?
No. My lips are too pink already. People see lip gloss on me as it is, so imagine what’d happen if I actually did wear it!

You’ve said you have a near perfect body in IHLS.
No, I don’t. It’s as near as I can get it. When I say near perfect, that’s what I mean - as near to perfect as I could get it at the time. Maybe in two years, I’ll do even better.

Do you work out a lot?
I change depending on what I’m doing. Right now I’m not working out at all. As a result of that, I’ve lost a bit of weight. I lose weight if I don’t work out, I have to do that to maintain size. If I don’t work out, I remain very, very thin.

    Lucky!
Not for guys. IHLS, I think, involved doing the toughest workout that I think I’ve done in my life. That was because of two things - one, a scene where I wake up in the morning without a shirt, and the other, a song where my shirt is open and flying back, and I’m singing to the heavens. I wanted to look as near to perfect as I could for those scenes.

If you were a girl, you’d have been exhausted and grumpy all the time ...
I was. I was a very, very grumpy person at that time. I’m big on food ... and at the time, because I was eating utterly tasteless steamed food, I was a very, very grumpy person.

What sort of food are you big on?
Anything. Everything. Absolutely everything. I go nuts on Indian food when I’m in Delhi.

Have you ever gotten mobbed in Delhi?
No, I’m pretty careful with that. It’s gotten a bit hairy at times while shooting, but you have security so they can keep it under control.

You can’t just walk into any place and get something you want?
    Nope.

    Except a five star ...
Yeah, you have to be smart about it. If it’s a short way, and if you quickly walk through it, by the time people register that it’s you, you’re already gone. You gauge situations, take calculated risks.

It’s never happened that you walked through a street and no one recognised you ...
No, that you really can’t. For a short while, you can avoid being recognised. It’s a strange thing, like a star aura you can turn on and turn off. I can turn it off and for a long time, people will not notice that I’m there. Or you can actually turn it on and - I can walk into a room and people by themselves just turn around and look. It’s a weird thing, if there is such a thing.

Anything you miss because of all this visibility?
    I can’t browse anywhere.

Not even in Mumbai, which is supposed to be less star-struck than Delhi?
There’s a limit na. I can’t spend an hour browsing somewhere. I can’t just walk into a place not knowing what I want and just look at stuff. Everything needs to be a tactical mission - I need to know what I want, so I’ll pull up, I know where my entry point is, my exit point, and my car will be ready and I’ll get into it and be gone.

When we asked Sonam about you ragging her about appearing in those ‘deadly numbers’, she was very surprised, and said that Avantika (Imran’s fiancĂ©) is a pretty cool dresser. Have they met?
Yeah, of course they’ve met. Avantika was there during the shoot in New Zealand.

You like to have her come along when you’re shooting?
Yeah, otherwise it gets very lonely.

    Co-actors, directors - they’re not company?
How much company... At some point, you want someone from home - friends, family. If you’re a heroine, you get your mummy along, I can’t do that because it would be weird.

Does your mum also think it’d be weird?
    Yeah, it’d be pretty weird.

You’re not very big on talking about Avantika now, are you?
I feel there’s not much left to talk about. It was such a grand topic during the promotions of Jaane Tu ... that now I don’t know what’s left to say. People say, so you’re very open about your relationship. Yes, I am. Ab kya?

But why did you decide to talk about it right from the beginning?
It’s easier than hiding it. Really, if you’re trying to lie or hide something, everyone knows what’s actually going on.

Isn’t she bugged that the whole country knows?
Umm ... er ... she’s never brought that up. I don’t think it bothers her, I’d imagine she’d have told me if it did. Some things you just take as it is. It’s not like we’re hiding from our families.

How did she take the gay icon thing? How did you take the gay icon thing?
It’s flattering, but it’s not a big deal. As an actor, you want people to like you. It’s not like, oh my God, suddenly I have gay fans. That means I have fans, no? It doesn’t make me uncomfortable or anything.

Like having a votebank - and you couldn’t care less who it is ...
It’s not that you couldn’t care less, you just don’t differentiate. When you have fans, you respect and appreciate them, but you don’t differentiate. It’s not like arrey, now I have fans in China, now I’ve arrived!
But it must be a little different having gay fans and being a huge hit in China. Yeah, I think it translates into more tickets sold (laughs).

It was that one particular photo that did it, right?
Yeah, the one with me lying on my stomach. The entire idea with this photoshoot was to push that look a bit, because that ties into what my character and the film is.

How does it tie in with a sarcastic cynic who doesn’t believe in love?
It’s the sexy look. He’s a womaniser, a player. He’s the guy who believes in sex, not love.

You play a womaniser? Was it aspirational for you - I’d like to play a womaniser someday?
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it might be aspirational for a lot of guys, a lot of guys are gonna watch it and - in the first half - go ‘yes, that’s the way it is!’ It’s probably not a good thing to be in real life, though.

Imran's surprised by response to 'I Hate Love Storys'

And what's he saying about those marriage date rumours?

'I Hate Luv Storys' has collected approximately Rs.21.5 crore in the domestic circuit in the first three days of its release and hero Imran Khan says he is surprised by the "grand opening" it has got.

"I feel honestly very surprised with the numbers. I had told (director) Punit Malhotra that it's a very good film and I was quite confident with the way it was promoted, but I didn't expect such a opening," Imran said.

Asked if he thought it was wise to release the film after 'Kites' and 'Raavan', he said: "I think everything went in our favour. There are things you can't plan for and everything happened by good fortune."

Imran has signed a film with producer-director Karan Johar and it was rumoured that he would be romancing Kareena Kapoor in the movie.

"See, I have signed another film with Karan, but until he announces it I can't talk anything about it," Imran said.

Imran is also wrapping up director Kunal Kohli's 'Break Ke Baad', in which he will be seen opposite Deepika Padukone.

"It's a romantic and coming of age film. It's multiple genres," the young actor said, unwilling to disclose anything more about the film.

Speculation was also rife that Imran may tie the knot with his girlfriend Avantika Malik in January 2011, but he denied it, saying that he would be shooting during that period.

"Actually in January, I will be shooting for Karan's film," he said.

Aamir, Imran lock horns on Twitter

Imran Khan's latest film I Hate Luv Storys may be taking the box office by storm, but one person who isn't impressed by the actor is his uncle, Aamir Khan. Aamir plays down the success of his nephew, Imran by calling it 'luck'.

"Imran, guess you got lucky," tweeted Aamir.

Imran was quick to retort on the micro blogging site: "It ain't luck mamujaan."

The Jaane Tu.. actor says, "Each of us had put in a lot of hard work into the film."

The friendly sparring with his perfectionist uncle is part of family bonding insists Imran.

"Aamir will never have anything nice to say about my work and that is how it will be. Criticism runs within the family and that's how it has always been," said Imran.

Imran feels there will be more fireworks when Aamir actually sees the movie I Hate Luv Storys.

"I am dreading the moment mamu will watch the film. He's not going to be good to me about it...", says Imran.

So what will Aamir's reaction be? Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na!

Imran Khan finally set a wedding date?

Imran Khan's latest release 'I Hate Luv Storys' is wowing the box office and looks like he's ready now to take his real-life love story to the next level too. It seems that Imran will be marrying girlfriend Avantika Malik in January 2011. The couple got engaged in January this year, and there'd been rumours even a few months ago that they'd be getting married soon. At the time, Imran had denied that they'd set a date.

So is Imran really getting married in January 2011, or is this just another rumour? Watch this space for updates and more details.

'I Hate Luv Storys' finds love at the box office

Imran Khan-Sonam Kapoor starrer takes in Rs 215 million in first three days of its release

Imran Khan and Sonam Kapoor's romantic comedy 'I Hate Luv Storys' (IHLS) might be about a guy's hatred for mushy movies, but it has managed to bag just the opposite from reaction audiences. The film has done a net business of approximately Rs.21.5 crore (Rs.215 million) in the domestic circuit in the first three days of its release.

Co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Dharma Productions, the movie opened with net collections of Rs.6.5 crore (Rs.65 million) on July 2 with soaring business over the weekend.

"We have got a good amount with almost 85 percent occupancy during the weekend. People are liking the movie especially the younger generation. It has good cinematography and a contemporary story. We hope it does well during weekdays and has a second weekend run," Jayendra Banerji, vice president (Operations) of Satyam Cineplexes, said.

Said Amit Awasthi, senior manager (Programming and Operations) of Spice Cinemas: "The weekend for IHLS was very good with close to 85 percent occupancy and gross collection of Rs.2.3 million over the weekend with 26 shows per day. Imran and Sonam's chemistry is being appreciated and proves that Imran is a complete chocolate boy while Sonam is Bollywood's bubbly asset."

A source from PVR cinemas said: "The weekend was good and we had over 70 percent occupancy. We are running on an average 10 shows per property per day and hoping this one will get a second weekend run too. It has been enormously liked by college going audiences and the youth for its contemporary appeal."

"People are also liking the new pairing of Imran and Sonam." the source added.

Directed by debutant Punit Malhotra, IHLS revolves around Jay (Imran) and Simran (Sonam), who are complete opposites of each other in terms of romance. While Jay doesn't believe in love and condemns it as a cynic, Simran swears by it and has a very Bollywood idea of the emotion.

The movie is Imran's first hit after 'Kidnap' and 'Luck' did badly and Sonam's first ever hit after big-budget duds 'Saawariya' and 'Delhi-6'.

"The IHLS weekend went fairly well. Occupancy was a decent one with 45-50 percent. Youngsters are liking the movie. Even on Monday people are inquiring about weekday shows," said Deepak Taluja, senior vice president (Business and Operations) of Fun Cinemas.

"We are running around eight to 10 shows for three screen properties and around 12-14 shows for four screen properties. We are hoping for a decent show for IHLS in the next weekend as well," he added.

Amit Shah, chief manager (Programming) of DLF DT cinemas said: "Despite not so great reviews by critics, IHLS has done an exceptionally good business with an initial weekend of over 75 percent occupancy. In fact, our Chandigarh property had a 100 percent occupancy for all the three days.

"It is a completely youth centric film and hopefully it will sustain in the second week too," he added.

Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (Cinemas) of Wave Cinemas says the box office performance of the film met their expectations.

"The business for IHLS went as per expectations and has been above average. The movie has got youth appeal and since it had no competition at the box office in terms of Hindi films last Friday, it has done a satisfactory business with family support. We are running on an average 16 shows per day per property."

Imran misses Aamir

Says his superstar uncle doesn't have time to babysit him

He might be basking in the success of his recent hit 'I Hate Luv Storys' but Bollywood's chocolate boy Imran Khan rues the absence of superstar uncle Aamir Khan in his career.

"Aamir is really busy with his own career. He is generally very caught up with his own work. Being busy as he is, he really doesn’t have the time to babysit me," Imran said.

The 27-year-old shone to glory with his launch vehicle 'Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na' produced by his maternal uncle. His next two releases 'Kidnap' and 'Luck' didn't do well.

Asked if something was in the pipeline for the nephew-uncle duo to star together, Imran said: "Nothing on the cards right now. In life, if something good comes up, I’m sure we’ll do it."

Imran to romance Kareena!

If the buzz in the industry is to be believed, then Imran Khan will woo Kareena Kapoor in Karan Johar's untitled production. The film will be the directorial debut of Imran's friend Shakun Batra. Shakun had earlier worked as assistant director on Rock On!! and Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na. The film is set to go on the floors in December.

The two have often stated publicly that they will like to work with each other. So after romancing Aamir Khan, Kareena will be seen with his nephew Imran.

B.O. update: Youth luves 'Luv Storys', film starts with a bang

    I Hate LUV Storys, Imran Khan,Sonam Kapoor,Sameer Dattani,Sameer Soni,Bruna Abdulla,Ketaki Dave,Anju Mahendroo,Aamir Ali Malik,Pooja Ghai

The second half of 2010 has begun with a bang, with the first release of July, I HATE LUV STORYS, fetching a fantabulous start. The film took off in a big way from the morning shows itself, with big city multiplexes opening to 80% to 90% response. At places, the occupancy was 100% as well. At plexes of relatively smaller centres, the opening was in 60% to 70% range, while single screens, expectedly, were not strong. The opening at some single screens was good [it picked up at big centres during the course of the day], but at smaller centres, it was below average, in 30% to 40% range.

Looking at the tremendous response from the youth, several plexes decided to add more shows on Friday itself. Also, at several plexes, the film fetched one of the biggest starts of the year. The opening day figures at several plexes were at par with 3 IDIOTS and RAAJNEETI.

Imran's second release, KIDNAP, which came right after the smash hit JAANE TU YA JAANE NA, had fetched approx. Rs. 4.85 cr. nett on Day 1 [Thursday; National Holiday], while LUCK had fetched approx. Rs. 3.5 cr. nett on Day 1. I HATE LUV STORYS, Imran's fourth release after KIDNAP and LUCK sank at the box-office, is expected to fetch approx. Rs. 7 cr. on its opening day, which is fabulous.

The brand Karan Johar + fresh pairing + excellent music + terrific promotion have lured the youth in hordes, while the audience feedback ranges from good to excellent [the youth is loving it].

MOVIE REVIEW: I Hate LUV Storys

The first thing that attracts you to I HATE LUV STORYS is its title. Let's face it, we adore love stories... at least I do. We idolise the characters decades after the movies have come and gone. The songs that come on our lips instantly while playing a game of antakshri are romantic songs as well. In fact, the biggest moneyspinners, let's face it, have been love stories, right? So how can we 'hate' a love story?

No matter how mushy or cheesy they are, we find love stories irresistible because of the tremendous rush we experience at the end. Some of us are big suckers for love sagas, aren't we? That's precisely the reason why this title [I HATE LUV STORYS] nagged me no end every time I watched the promo of this film.

Helmed by first-timer Punit Malhotra, I HATE LUV STORYS is typical candyfloss romance with a story that's not jaw-droppingly different, let me forewarn you. But if you're young at heart or a diehard and hopeless romantic, you'd lap up I HATE LUV STORYS like a kid laps up his fav candy.

Now to the vital question: If I HATE LUV STORYS rests on a thin plot, what is it that drives the film for the next two hours? My answer to that is, four factors: The fresh pairing and chemistry between the lead cast, tremendous youth appeal, terrific music and magical moments that make a love story work.

Final word? The makers have never claimed that I HATE LUV STORYS will change the face of Hindi cinema. Nor did they ever claim that I HATE LUV STORYS will change the mindset of the viewer towards romantic films. So let's sit back and enjoy the fun ride. This one's by the youth, for the youth. It's this age-group that would come out smiling, cheering and rooting for this prem kahani.

'I hate love stories' is the maxim Jay [Imran Khan] lives by. But as an assistant director to Veer [Samir Soni], the most famous romantic film-maker of Indian film industry, Jay has little option but to live with larger than life, glossy, cinematic love on an everyday basis. Things only get worse when he is made to work under the new production designer on the film, Simran [Sonam Kapoor], with whom he shares the strangest first encounter.

Simran loves love stories, so much so that even her life has begun to resemble one. With her ideal job and the perfect boyfriend Raj [Samir Dattani], she lives a blissful, dreamy life. One that is rudely interrupted by Jay's cynicism.

Writer-director Punit Malhotra wins Round 1 by casting the right actors in the roles of Jay and Simran. In fact, it wouldn't be erroneous to state that the casting is the trump card of this film. But what Punit ought to know by now is that every story ought to have a strong grip to keep your attention arrested for the next two hours. In this case, the film rests on a waferthin plot, with not much movement in the story in the first hour. In fact, the story barely moves in the first part.

Yes, post-interval, the story does gather momentum and though you're well aware of the journey and what the culmination will be like, you don't mind the ride because you can't take your eyes off Imran and Sonam. Also, a love story works if one pines for the on-screen lovers and in I HATE LUV STORYS, you genuinely want the duo to sort things out, which means that you're involved in their lives. Even the finale - it won't be fair on my part to reveal how this movie concludes - may be filmy or cliched, but let's face it, it works.

Let me draw parallels with another love story, also starring Imran Khan. Recall the finale of JAANE TU YA JAANE NA, which had Imran riding a horse to reach his sweetheart [Genelia] at the airport. I distinctly recall, a lot of people found the end bizzare and rightly so. Can you imagine anyone galloping to the international airport in Mumbai? But I was truly surprised when I learnt that the youth were whistling and clapping all through. The finale is different here [no horses, please] and you exit the auditorium with a smile on your face.

Director Punit Malhotra is heavily inspired by Mills & Boon novels and several Bollywood films... love stories all. But like I pointed out earlier, Punit needs to polish his writing skills, although the director in him bails the writer out and takes the film to a different level. The sequences between Imran and Sonam are well penned, but the ones between Sonam and her parents or Sonam and Samir Dattani are half-baked. Directorially, Punit shows super-confidence in moulding the two actors in their respective parts, so much so that you get sucked into Jay and Simran's world after a while.

A love story ought to be embellished with a lilting score - that's a compulsion - and Vishal-Shekhar are in true form this time. The score is trendy, energetic and beyond fantastic and what's more, it's already a rage. In fact, the musical score only takes the movie a step ahead. Ditto for Salim-Sulaiman's background score, which matches the mood to the T. Ayananka Bose's cinematography is awesome. The ace DoP proved his credentials in KITES recently and with I HATE LUV STORYS, he should find himself entrenched in the top bracket. The styling [Manish Malhotra] is top notch.

Imran enacts his part effortlessly. Though the role doesn't demand histrionics, you keep reacting to Imran because of the magnetism he radiates. The devilish streak in his character is sure to appeal to the youth. Besides, Imran has been photographed and presented very well. Sonam is a revelation. From salwars [SAAWARIYA, DELHI 6] to skirts in I HATE LUV STORYS, Sonam finally gets a role that does justice to her as an actress. The ease and class with which she carries off the glam look is fantastic. She's like a whiff of fresh air and you actually wonder, is she the same girl from SAAWARIYA and DELHI 6? In fact, I HATE LUV STORYS will only multiply Imran and Sonam's fan base manifold.

Samir Dattani is decent, although his role gets sidelined as the story moves forward. Samir Soni's character reminds you of a certain hi-profile director and he plays the part extremely well. Kavin Dave, as Imran's buddy, is first-rate and steals the show in several scenes. Aamir Ali is perfect, while Pooja Ghai doesn't get scope to deliver. Bruna Abdullah looks sensuous and adds to the glam quotient. Ketaki Dave [Sonam's mother] is wasted. Anju Mahendru [Imran's mother] is adequate.

On the whole, I HATE LUV STORYS is a young and vibrant love story with tremendous appeal for the yuppies. The fresh pairing and the on-screen electrifying chemistry, the lilting musical score and the magical moments in the film should attract its target audience - the youth - in hordes. If you're young or young at heart, this one's for you!

"Karan wanted me to look sexy"

Imran reveals how he transformed for KJo's 'I Hate Luv Storys'

Young actor Imran Khan, who is playing a bit of a womaniser in 'I Hate Luv Storys', says filmmaker Karan Johar wanted him to look effortlessly sexy for the role. He was put through rigorous workouts even though he doesn't quite like gymming.

"Karan is very particular about the look. The character I play is a kind of womaniser so he wanted to have that sexy edge. He said at any point the clothes should fit me in a certain way and I should have the look of a guy who is effortlessly sexy," Imran said in an interview from Mauritius, where he is shooting for "Break Ke Baad".

"He told me that I'll really have to work on my body to get that desired look. So, long before I started the film, I started training for that. I changed my diet, my workout pattern, everything."

Releasing July 2, 'I Hate Luv Storys' is Punit Malhotra's directorial debut that will see Imran romancing Sonam Kapoor on screen.

Unlike his colleagues, the 27-year-old is not so keen on going to the gym.

"I hate the gym. I find the gym damn boring so I opted for functional training. When I was half-way into the film, I did intensive workouts. I was working out twice a day... I was doing pilates (high end yoga) in the morning and functional training in the evening.

"And for about a month and a half, I was living on steamed fish, steamed vegetables and brown rice. I avoided everything - no oil, no spices, nothing of the good stuff," added the self-confessed foodie.

Imran struck gold with his debut movie 'Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na' in 2008. However, he couldn't repeat the same success story with 'Kidnap' and 'Luck'.

Considering its youth appeal, 'I Hate Luv Storys' looks similar to 'Jaane Tu…' But Imran doesn't agree. "The tone and treatment of this one is very different from 'Jaane Tu…' This is a little glamorous and toned up movie."

Speaking fondly of his co-star, he said: "Sonam and I hit it off really well right from the beginning. We were doing rehearsals together and we really started to know each other. Our style of working was quite similar. Professionally, she complimented me and I complimented her very well."

The story revolves around Jay and Simran, who are complete opposites when it comes to romance. While Jay doesn't believe in love, Simran swears by it and is quite filmy when it comes to love. In the film, both of them work for a well-known director who specialises in grand romantic potboilers.

Imran says it was a conscious decision to do ths light-hearted film. "When I came out of shooting 'Luck', I was really sick of action, thrill and darkness and I wanted to do something that was really light and fun. I was actually looking for a script like that and this one was apt as the entire tone was very irreverent. So on any given day and moment of time, we were doing things that were really cheeky and really fun."

The actor was also tipped as the next gay icon when pictures from the movie's photo shoot appeared for the first time."

"I am not really sure where that came from and how it came but who cares? If people like me, better... if people like the film, all the better."

"I Hate..." takes pot shots at Karan Johar's own romance films.

Imran said: "The kind of movies the director (in the movie) makes is inspired from Karan - how Karan makes grand movies on a grand scale, but the character is not actually based on any one director.

"We have taken a public image of how people perceive directors and we make fun of that. The idea is not to make a caricature or spoof or anything. That is not the intent. Our intent was always to make a fun, romantic comedy."

Imran's other future projects include his uncle Aamir Khan's home production 'Delhi Belly'.

WATCH (HQ) TRAILER: I Hate Luv Storys

Deepika gives Imran a 'lift'

She carried him on her back while they were shooting for 'Break Ke Baad'!

Yes, that's Deepika Padukone carrying Imran Khan on her back! Why on earth, you wonder? Just for laughs! The two have been shooting together for 'Break Ke Baad' and they've been having a lot of fun together. During the shoot in Delhi, Deepika is believed to have become quite close to Imran's girlfriend Avantika as well. But let's talk about this picture, which, by the way, was posted by Deepika herself on her Twitter account.

For a scene in the movie, Imran was required to carry Deepika. Deepika joked that she didn't think Imran could do it. To which Imran joked back, "I'll show her..." Then, turning the idea of a hero carrying a heroine around, Deepika carried Imran on her back! The two were just goofing around of course. And we have to admit it makes for a very funny picture, and it's always good to see stars with a sense of humour!
