Bipasha wants to focus on serious roles

After getting favourable reviews for her role in 'Lamhaa', Bipasha Basu is in no mood to swing back into fluffy, ultra-glam roles. The dusky actress says she has more serious stuff lined up - a film on honour killings and another on Goa's drug mafia.

In fact when actor and beau John Abraham saw Bipasha in 'Lamhaa'', based on the turmoil in the Kashmir Valley, he was so blown away that he advised her to only get into projects that brought out her acting skills.

"John loved me in 'Lamhaa'. He has done a film on terrorism, 'New York', and he feels we both need to stretch ourselves as actors beyond entertainment," said Bipasha.

So are John and Bipasha looking beyond their great physique and high glamour quotient?

Said Bipasha: "Sure, I'm very proud of my physique. I've worked hard on it. But now I'm hungering for challenges as an actress. In 'Lamhaa', I was not only in a burqa throughout, I also got a chance to understand how life is lived in an atmosphere of crisis."

Though she didn't plan it that way, Bipasha's next two films - Priyadarshan's 'Aakrosh' and Rohan Sippy's 'Dum Maro Dum' - again feature her in films and roles that address themselves to socially-relevant issues.

"Until I finished 'Lamhaa' I didn't notice that the only two films I've signed after that are about burning issues," she said.

While 'Aakrosh' is about honour killings, 'Dum Maro Dum' is about the drug mafia in Goa. In both, Bipasha says she's pulled out all stops to deliver real performances.

"Real doesn't necessarily mean de-glamourised. While in 'Aakrosh' I play a school teacher in a dusty, small town of north India and wear cottons, in 'Dum Maro Dum', which is about substance abuse, my character Zoyi is very zany, with it and a girl of today. I'm very glamorous in 'Dum Maro Dum'," the actress revealed.

Both the films would again require her to stretch her limits as an actor. 'Aakrosh', in fact, has been as exhausting for Bipasha as 'Lamhaa'.

"The way Priyadarshan has dealt with the subject of honour killings is remarkable. Again as an actress I was put in a situation I had little knowledge of. I learnt about honour killings and Kashmir on the job. Not that I don't read the newspapers. But reading about these things is one thing, seeing them first-hand is another," she said.

In 'Aakrosh' she has a sequence of mob trauma.

"At least one could prepare and rehearse in 'Aakrosh', no such luxuries in 'Lamhaa'. We sometimes literally had seven minutes to shoot in a crowded lane or street of Srinagar and flee before being accosted. That suited me fine because I'm a one-take actor," she said.

Bipasha says she was taken aback by children's lives in Kashmir.

"I was shocked by how alienated Kashmiris are from the mainstream of Indian life. They (children) are not allowed to go out and play. When Sanjay Dutt shot a song in a garden with kids, it was literally a rare treat for them. They had never been to a movie theatre. But the kids had seen some of my movies on pirated DVDs," she said.

Now Bipasha wants to pitch in whatever way she can for Kashmir's kids. "It's easy to talk about helping the distressed sections. But assuming an initiative is very difficult."

John and Bipasha will create awareness about Kashmir's issues in Bollywood.

Bipasha reveals what's been driving her through her B'wood career

Dealing with work pressure may not be everyone's cup of tea, but Bipasha Basu admits that's just what has been driving her through her nearly decade-long career in Bollywood.

"When I started out, I was called this unconventional, dark, tall and sexy woman, and these were taboo for being a film actor at that point of time. I had to deal with all that," Bipasha told reporters in New Delhi on July 31.

"There was also a point six years back when people said - 'Bipasha is fat'. So for me it's been a growth with all these pressures, and yes, I do play very well under pressure," she added.

The 31-year-old actress braved the Mumbai rains and flew to the capital to introduce a new range of shower heads by bath products manufacturer Kohler.

The range is unique as the shower heads have been custom designed for Indian homes which often have low water pressure. Hence, Bipasha ended up talking about the pressures in her life.

"I believe in 'love yourself' and you have to be always confident of who you are. That always helps. The pressures will always remain," she said.

"Somewhere all these pressures actually make you fight back, make you understand yourself and you become a complete person at the end of the day," she added.

The secret behind her happiness is that she hopes for "realistic things", Bipasha said.

"I believe in realistic goals and that's one reason for my contentment. There's no end to what you may want from life but you will always be happier if you set achievable goals," she said.

The actress has earlier starred in movies like 'Ajnabee', 'Raaz', 'Jism', 'Omkara' and 'Race'. Among her forthcoming releases are 'Aakrosh' and 'Dum Maaro Dum'.

A who's who list of Bollywood stars following Hollywood biggies on popular micro-blogging platform Twitter

Here's a who's who list of B-Towners following Hollywood biggies on Twitter. Find out what it says to be in the company they keep

What does it say about you when you decide to follow someone on Twitter? And that too, when the object of your attention is saat samundar paar? We decided to psychoanalyse our B-Town Twitterers based on their shared histories and our Wikipedia research. We bring you the results of our study. Read on...

    Follower: Shah Rukh Khan (@iamsrk)
    Following: Shakira (@shakira)
What it says about him: Shah Rukh has no starry airs. He is a star but when he meets other performers, he gets as excited as any other besotted fan. He has even tweeted pictures of Shakira posing with his family in South Africa.

    Follower: Lara Dutta (@duttalara)
    Following: Hugh Jackman (@realhughjackman)
What it says about him: That she likes her men strong, sexy and romantic. And loyal -- Hugh is one of the few H-Town actors who has been with the same woman for 15 years.

    Follower: Bipasha Basu (@bipsluvurself)
    Following: Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk)
What it says about her: That she likes guys with a sense of humour and a hot bod. Demi Moore's husband is known for his funny shows and his toned frame.

    Follower: Sanjay Dutt (@duttsanjay)
    Following: Russell Crowe (@russellcrowe)
What it says about him: That he sees similarities in their lives. They have dealt with their trouble with the law, Gladiator-like. Also, their Beautiful Minds have them performing acts worthy of a Robin Hood.

    Follower: Shahid Kapoor (@shahidkapoor)
    Following: Justin Timberlake (@jtimberlake)
What it says about him: He doesn't shy away from admiring dancing men -- and ones who can successfully hide details of their personal life. Both men shut out the media after their break-ups. Notice the similarities?

    Follower: Priyanka Chopra (@priyankachopra)
Following: Eminem (@Eminem), Mariah Carey (@MariahCarey)
What it says about her: Priyanka loves strong people who can think of failures as stepping stones to success. Mariah resurrected her career after a nervous breakdown and Eminem came back after his drug addiction. PC also hears both sides of an argument before judging someone. Why else will she follow both singers who have been at odds since 2003?

    Follower: Sonam Kapoor (@sonamakapoor)
    Following: Leonardo DiCaprio (@LeoDiCaprio)
What it says about her: Even though she has been offered a Ben Stiller film, she follows Leo, not the funnyman. That could possibly mean only one thing: she wants to be on DiCaprio's radar and is holding out till she's offered Inception 2. Mr Nolan, are you listening?

    Follower: Karan Johar (@kjohar25)
    Following: Paris Hilton (@ParisHilton)
What it says about him: That KJo is an ardent admirer of the heiress-turned-model-turned actress. It's no secret he only wants to be surrounded by good-looking and rich folks, and he's even ready to follow them, if need be. Or maybe he wants to do a show inspired by her (not-so) Simple Life.

    Follower: Imran Khan (@1mrankhan)
    Following: Bob Saget (@bobsaget)
What it says about him: That Imran is a fan of the sweet family show that ran on for years. Maybe he sees the similarities between his close-knit family and that on the show. However, there is that little detail of Bob playing a single dad Danny Tanner in the hugely popular family show, while our boy is ready to get hitched. See, we told you he is a family guy.

    Follower: Ram Gopal Varma (@RGVzoomin)
    Following: Woody Allen (@WoodyAllen)
What it says about him: That even though he makes scary films, he loves a man with a sense of humour. Also let's not forget how much both men love nubile young beauties. Professionally, maybe after paying tribute to intense, brooding filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, RGV now wants to follow Woody.

John is Bipasha's 'Jewellery supplier'

All that glitters on Bipasha Basu actually comes from her beau John Abraham. The sultry actress confesses that all the jewellery she has is gifted by her boyfriend.

"All the jewellery comes to me from John. He is my diamond supplier," Bipasha told reporters after the launch of a new ad campaign of Gili, the jewellery brand of Gitanjali, at Taj Lands End in Mumbai.

Asked about the kind of engagement ring she is looking forward to, she said: "Well the engagement ring comes from the other side. You have to ask this to the other side. I hope it's nice and beautiful; not too big, not too small, just the right size for my finger."

Bipasha maintains that her mother saves a lot of jewellery for her, but she is happy with her own stuff.

"My mother saves a lot of gold and diamond jewellery for me. I have not really looked into it. Till now, I am very happy with my jewellery," said Bipasha.

Bipasha's recent release 'Lamhaa' has garnered mixed reviews but she is happy the way media and public have raved her performance.

"I guess that every film has its destiny but I am very proud to be a part of 'Lamhaa' and the kind of appreciation I got was excellent both from people from media and common man. I have got fantastic feedback for my part as Aziza. You can't really control what actually happens to the film," said Bipasha

Bipasha's naughty wish for Priyanka

It’s Priyanka Chopra’s 28th birthday today, and the wishes are flowing in from across B’wood. PC is celebrating with her close friends in Phuket (on an all-girl beach holiday) and so T’town is sending her messages via Twitter. While most stars had the usual words of greeting and wishes, Bipasha Basu had something different to say. Read on for what came Priyanka’s way.

Preity Zinta posted: "Happy birthday babe :-) Lots of love always!"

Riteish Deshmukh added: "Hum bhi agar bachche hote naam hamara hota Paplu-Taplu, khane ko milte laddu- aur duniya kehti - Happy Burday to YOU."

Shammi Kapoor wrote: "Bhole Baba Ki Jai. Many Happy Returns. Neila joins. Love"

Priyanka’s ‘Dostana’ director Tarun Mansukhani said, “Here’s wishing my fabulous desi girl a very very happy birthday! May u hv the most rocking year ahead!”

And then there was Bipasha with, “Happy Bday dear darling Priyanka frm me n all my friends on twitter !May u get more success money happiness n a lovely PUNJABI lover:)”

This was in response to Priyanka’s comment that she wanted to find a nice Punjabi boy to settle down with. Nice Punjabi boy? Think she’s talking about someone from B’wood there?

Priyanka had tweeted earlier in the day, “Thank u all for ur amazing birthday wishes.. It means soooo much.. I'm having a super time with my gals!! Catch yall soon!!”

MOVIE REVIEW: Lamhaa

During the showcasing of LAMHAA at the recently held I.I.F.A. in Sri Lanka, I was compelled to ask director Rahul Dholakia about the catch line of the film: 'The untold story of Kashmir'. Obviously, I was curious. What was Dholakia going to narrate that we, the viewers, hadn't witnessed in films earlier or read in newspapers or watched on news channels? Dholakia gave a convincing response, justifying the catch line, but obviously not revealing much about the film.

As LAMHAA unfolds, you realize that Dholakia may've borrowed a few incidents from life, but as it moves forward, it comes across as a typical Bollywood enterprise that harps on being real, but ends up being a masala film that we have witnessed over and over again. The catch line, in my individualistic opinion, is quite misleading.

Dholakia seems to have researched extensively on the issue and LAMHAA does boast of some razor-sharp moments, but the viewer is keen to have an insider's viewpoint on Kashmir, something that we haven't read/seen [on news channels/films] earlier, which LAMHAA just doesn't provide.

Just one word for this film: Disappointing!

The Military Intelligence gets a whiff of a plot that is likely to disrupt and possibly paralyze Kashmir. Vikram [Sanjay Dutt] is sent to investigate this highly confidential mission and he assumes the identity of Gul Jehangir. The same day that he lands in the valley, Haji [Anupam Kher], a top separatist leader, survives a blast. Is there a connection between the blast and the operation?

To solve this conundrum, Vikram teams up with Aziza [Bipasha Basu], Haji's young, aggressive and outspoken protégé. The intensity of their beliefs and their will to survive against all odds creates a special bond between them. They embark together on a journey to uncover the truth.

First things first! LAMHAA has been filmed in Kashmir and you're awe-struck by its beauty, with DoP James Fowlds doing a splendid job in capturing the scenic locales on celluloid. The constant shaking of the camera also gives a real feel. Unfortunately, LAMHAA, though controversial in nature, merely touches the tip of the issue, instead of going all-out and narrating a story that offers reasons and perhaps, a solution to the crisis.

The problem clearly lies in its scripting, the written material [screenplay: Raghav Dhar, Rahul Dholakia]. Like I pointed out earlier, Dholakia should've stuck to realism, instead of trying to strike a balance between realism and make-believe. The viewer is told at the very outset, and also at regular intervals, that 'something big [read destructive] is going to occur'. But the entire conspiracy comes across as too trivial during the final moments of the film and therefore, the impact is missing.

Honestly, LAMHAA comes across as a disjointed effort, in terms of writing. It's more of a collage of several isolated incidents, which explains why the screenplay lacks the power to keep you engaged. Sure, a few sequences are attention grabbing, but showing the heroic side of Sanjay Dutt [rescuing Bipasha all the while - from the cops, from Rajesh Khera's henchmen, from a lecherous Yashpal Sharma] appears very filmy. Even the finale - Sanju busting the conspiracy - comes across as child's play.

One expects a lot from Dholakia, but he lets you down completely in LAMHAA. The politicians wanting a bigger piece of pie or children getting trained for jehad or their bodies being stuffed with bombs is not an eye-opener anymore. What one is keen to know is the mindset of Kashmiris, which, frankly, this film doesn't really project. In the end, if you recall the visuals, not the content, it means something is seriously wrong with the film and LAMHAA, sadly, is right intentions gone wrong. Even the dialogue [Sai Kabir, Ashwath Bhatt], like the screenplay writing, tries to strike a balance between real and filmy. Mithoon's music is easy on the ears, but acts as a speed breaker in the narrative.

Sanjay Dutt tries hard to look the character, but I just couldn't connect with it. The rugged look, the sunglasses and the trendy attire made me feel that Sanju had strolled into the sets from an ad film shoot. Bipasha, again, doesn't look her part, although I must add that she has put in a lot of effort to stay true to her character. The sequence when she's attacked by the women workers of Anupam Kher's political party is simply brilliant.

Kunal Kapoor is royally sidelined in the first hour, but has a few interesting scenes in the second half. His speech in the finale is flat and devoid of the required emotions. Anupam Kher is the lone actor who actually looks the character he has been assigned to portray.

Mahesh Manjrekar is wasted. Ditto for Yashpal Sharma. Vipin Sharma is effective. Jyoti Dogra stands out. Murli Sharma is perfect. Shernaz Patel is decent. Rajesh Khera, Yuri Suri, Vishwajeet Pradhan, Asif Basra, Denzil Smith and Ehsaan Khan are okay in their respective parts.

On the whole, LAMHAA just doesn't work.

    RATING: 1.5/5

Lamhaa banned in Middle East

Rahul Dholakia's Lamhaa starring Sanjay Dutt and Bipasha Basu has been banned in the Middle East.

Apparently, the censor boards of the Middle Eastern countries have found the film too hot to handle, as it is set against the backdrop of terrorism in Kashmir.

Dutt tweets, "First the premiere of Lamhaa was not allowed in Kashmir. Now the Middle East puts a ban on the release of the film in their countries."

Who's Bollywood's Best Health Guru?

When Shahrukh Khan first joined Twitter all he could tweet about was healthy food and workout regimes, and while SRK has moved on to other topics for now, B-town beauties Shilpa Shetty and Bipasha Basu have started to share their health tips with fans and followers; so which Bollywood star tweets the best health tips; Shahrukh, Shilpa or Bips? Check out their tweets here and pick your favorite Bollywood health guru!

When Shahrukh Khan first joined Twitter he was busy tweeting away to anyone who would listen! The King of Bollywood tweeted a lot of advice on how to stay healthy and fit. And who wouldn't like to have a slim body like Shahrukh's? Well, in order to get fit like the My Name is Khan star, just follow these... simple steps!

"Just so that u know..the only advice that works to get a six pack is the old age one...JUST EAT LESS !!! THATS IT!"

Sounds easy enough, but we're sure even SRK can't resist a good meal every now and then!

"then no carbs only protein...damn..finding pieces of chicken in a crowd of rice...and still feeling guilty that i ate biryani...sucked" Just what we thought; everyone needs to eat!

And one thing that doesn't work for Shahrukh is diet pills. In fact, they seem to have the reverse effect: "fat burners followed..hydroxy this...hydroxy that..started to feel fat eating so many tablets."

But in the end it looks like the slim actor doesn't diet at all: "no i dont diet..it was just to deter anyone using stuff that proclaims weight loss."

And if Shahrukh's advice seemed harsh at first, he ends on a high - and hungry - note as he tells everyone to eat what they wish! "sleep when u feel sleepy...eat what u wish...talk what makes u happy and just smile a lot...and of course love urself as u are."

Bipasha Basu has one of the fittest bodies and B-town so it's no wonder that she recently released a fitness DVD called Love Yourself. And as this star just joined Twitter she is taking the opportunity to share some of her best tips to stay in shape!

"Unhealthy snacking is equal to extra cals. So eat small healthy meals that will keep you goin thru the day n keep u really activ."

Sounds easy but what does Bips suggest we start our day with?

"fit, Ideal Breakfast oats/bran wth skim milk,4 egg whites in ny style, whole wheat toast, juice or cut fruits. yoghurt at times.yum!"

Sounds yummy indeed! Any last word of wisdom?

"Lve urself is abt respecting urself and liking evry bit of urself. Being confident in who u r and nt wanting to b a clone."

Shilpa Shetty is no ugly duckling herself and sure knows how to eat healthy and exercise the right way! She can't help but to share some of her wisdom on Twitter and here's what she has to say:

"Avoid chewing too much gum as synthenic sweetners like sorbitol hav been linked 2 several gastrointestinal ailments, causes bloating etc"

No chewing gum, check! So what should we eat according to the always svelte actress?

"Health tip:choose sweet potatos instead of normal potatos, since they r low in glycemic index.great pre or post work out snack. Todays health tip:must have enough Vitaman C once ure 30(esp women)fresh amla juice shot(available in supermarkets) or 2 oranges."

So fruits instead of heavy foods; sounds good! What else do we need to think about according to health guru Shilpa?

"Its not abt being on a perpetual Diet of Denial,Its abt the Lifestyle Choices u make every single day.. Make the Right choice."

As 'Dostana' director Tarun Mansukhani puts it, "This is the closest you're gonna get to John on twitter!!!"

Bipasha gets fooled

Which hero played a prank on her?

He's got a reputation for playing pranks on his co-stars and friends, so Akshay Kumar was just living up to that tag when he recently fooled Bipasha Basu. Here's how it happened. Akki was shooting at a studio in Mumbai, and Bips got there too. When she heard that he was around, she wanted to meet him. And so Bipasha started to look for Akshay, but she just couldn't find him.

It turns out that Akki was right in front of her all the time, except that he was dressed up as an old man! And he made poor Bips go through the search routine for almost 30 minutes before taking off the costume and make-up to show her who he really was. It's another score for prankster Akshay but when's someone going to play a prank on him? Will Bips be game?
