Aamir's 'Peepli Live' wins its first award

After his movies 'Lagaan' and 'Taare Zameen Par' which did well on the festival circuit, looks like Aamir Khan has another winner on his hands. His home production 'Peepli Live', which releases on August 13, has already won its first award. The movie, directed by Anusha Rizvi, picked up the prize for Best First Feature Film at the Durban International Film Festival.


The International Jury commented, "Peepli Live is an ambitious and well-realised film that deals with serious political issues in a witty and entertaining manner. It creates an enchanting world of colourful characters, images and music that engrosses viewers throughout."


Well, Aamir was the one who greenlighted Anusha's project. So he sure knows how to pick winners!

Aamir Khan takes Peepli [Live] to Los Angeles

A visitor from Los Angeles sent us this picture of Aamir Khan at the University of Southern California (USC).




Aamir was there for the screening of his latest production Peepli [Live] at its film school recently. The varsity has a large number of Indian students and they were very excited to meet the star.


The actor-turned-producer also addressed his audience, answered their questions and posed for photographs.

Aamir's losing sleep as 'Peepli Live' release nears

Aamir Khan is known to give his heart and soul to his projects and the superstar admits that he's extremely nervous as his production venture 'Peepli Live' nears its release date.


"As 13th Aug gets closer, the butterflies in my stomach are really beginning to flutter around. Have lost my appetite and my sleep," Aamir wrote on his blog.


"I'm really depending on you guys (audiences) this time round for support. This is an especially tough one with no big stars and a film based in a rural background."


"For those of you living outside India please tell all your friends, neighbours, collegues, gardners etc, who may not have ever seen an Indian film before, to give this one a try. Assuming you like it of course," he added.


Directed by debutant Anusha Rizvi, 'Peepli Live' is a satire on society. It revolves around two impoverished farmers - Natha (Omkar Das Manikpuri) and Budhia (Raghubir Yadav) - who live in a village called Peepli. They are about to lose their land due to their debts.


An incompetent politician suggests they commit suicide to get government help. The news spreads and the media turns Natha into a celebrity.

Aamir wants SRK to watch 'Peepli Live' (srkthedon.blogspot.com)

There used to be a time when Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan didn't exactly get along (Remember Aamir writing about having a dog named Shah Rukh, and that not going down too well with SRK?). Now things have changed, and it's possible that Karan Johar is the man for bringing about a proper patch-up between the two Khans.


Karan's always been very close to Shah Rukh, and he's been getting closer to Aamir. It sort of started with Aamir's nephew Imran being cast in KJo's 'I Hate Luv Storys' and then Aamir being the only non-cast member invited to the movie's success party. In turn, Aamir invited Karan to the music launch of his home production 'Peepli Live'.


Later, Aamir and Karan met up with Shah Rukh in London, where he's shooting for 'Ra.One'.


And now Aamir has invited Shah Rukh to the premiere of 'Peepli Live'. He said that SRK attended the 'Raavan' premiere, and that he'd definitely invite him for 'Peepli Live'. Now if only we saw a similar thawing and bonding between SRK and Salman too. Maybe Aamir could step in to bring them together.

Aamir's coming to Los Angeles, New York, Dubai & Australia

He's promoting 'Peepli Live'; first stop was London, where he also met SRK


Aamir Khan is in promotion mode for his 'Peepli Live', and he's covering a whole wide marketing ground. His home production releases in August, and Aamir has already started on a world tour of sorts to get the buzz going for it. He posted on his Twitter page, “In London now. Travelling to LA, NY, Dubai and Australia for Peepli interviews and promotions.” We hear he's going to be in Dubai towards the end of the week.


Meanwhile in London, Aamir met up with Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar. The power trio are said to have had dinner together at the Hakkasan restaurant. Shah Rukh's in the city shooting for his home production 'Ra.One'. Wife Gauri is with him too, and Karan is said to have flown down to meet them.


It seems Aamir even organised a special screening of 'Peepli Live' which SRK wasn't able to attend. But Karan saw the movie, and posted on his Twitter page, "Just saw PEEPLI LIVE..an outstanding and alive slice of cinema..ironic,humourous,reflective and genius!! Makes you think and rethink. Bravo!!"

Aamir turns drummer for Indian Ocean

He took to the stage with the band at the 'Peepli Live' music launch



Aamir Khan broke into an impromptu gig with the Indian Ocean band in Mumbai and took charge of the drums at the star-studded music launch of his forthcoming production 'Peepli Live'.


"Since childhood I wanted to perform on stage with a band and finally I got an opportunity. It's a dream come true thanks to Indian Ocean," said Aamir, after a thumping performance of the song 'Des mera rangrez' from the movie.


The number has been composed by the band, who invited the actor on stage before kicking off the show.


The music launch was attended by big names of Bollywood like Rani Mukerji, Karan Johar, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Ashutosh Gowarikar, Rajkumar Hirani and Sharman Joshi.


At the event, Karan told reporters that he would love to work with Aamir, to which the actor diplomatically replied: "Karan is a wonderful director. If the script is good and suitable for me, I would love to work with him."


Also attending were lyricist Prasoon Joshi, composers Shantanu Moitra and Ram Sampath and singer Sona Mohapatra. Aamir's wife Kiran Rao was also present for the launch.

Aamir also paid tribute to Asheem Chakravarty of the Indian Ocean band at the music launch. He said that the song 'Zindagi Se Darte' used in the film was the last song he composed.


"He (Asheem) was one of the members of Indian Ocean and unfortunately he passed away. It's a great loss to all the people who are close to him - Indian Ocean, his family and to his fans all across the world...and 'Zindagi Se Darte' was his last song," Aamir said.


"I am sure wherever he is, he will be blessing us and will be happy for us," he added before Indian Ocean took the stage and gave a thumping performance.


Aamir said that he has always been a great fan of the band.


"I have been a fan of Indian Ocean for quite a few years now and when Anusha (Rizvi) told me that she wants to work with Indian Ocean in this film…they are fantastic composers and their mix of folk and western is really amazing and I think both these songs 'Desh Mera' and 'Zindagi Se Darte' are really amazing songs," the actor-producer said.

The Perfectionist Aamir impressed with Anusha

Says the 'Peepli Live' filmmaker will give established directors a complex


Actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan is so impressed with first-time director Anusha Rizvi, who wielded the megaphone for his forthcoming production 'Peepli Live', that he claims she will give complex to many established directors.


"Not only she has written a great script, I was shocked to see how beautifully she has made the film. It's a very complicated story with many layers and bringing it to the celluloid was a very difficult job," said Aamir.


"I was a bit apprehensive about how she has made the film, as it's her first film. Hats off to her. She is really talented. She isn't a trained filmmaker, neither she has been assistant to any director, yet she has done a marvellous job and I think she will give complex to many established directors," he added.


He maintains Anusha, a former journalist, shows her experiences in narrating the story in 'Peepli Live'.


"When I heard the story about four years ago, I realised she is highly talented. Being a journalist, you travel to different places, meet different people, so I think it's her collection of experiences. And being a sensible person she has been able to form a story about a very sensitive issue India is facing. We are narrating the story in a very humorous way, but we are saying something very important," said Aamir.

"Anusha has written a fantastic script, but her approach is not negative. It's satirical but not judgemental. She doesn't try to point out what is right and what is wrong. She tries to show what is happening. Be it media, politics, administration or civil society, she is not deciding on what's right or wrong. I think that's a very positive attitude," said Aamir.


'Peepli Live' is the fourth film from Aamir Khan Productions Ltd after 'Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India' (2001), 'Taare Zameen Par'(2007) and 'Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na'(2008).


Asked if he was involved in the making of the film or otherwise, he said: "As a producer I don't get involved in certain stages, one of them is shooting. I get involved in the preparation, I get involved in promotion and release planning. I also get involved in post-production to a certain extent.


"I don't involve myself much because I trust the director and the reason I am working with this director is that I trust her. I would like the director to show what he or she feels through the film. That's important to me."
